Appeal for donation to sue the Lynas and the gomen

As you all know, we have been fighting Lynas from dumping radioactive waste in my hometown. It’s been a very tough fight, instead of listening to the people, the gomen intimidates us, disrupt our programs and sends in the FRUs. Instead of addressing the waste management plan as recommended by the IAEA, Lynas carries on the construction at full speed, and told investors they expect to get the pre-operating license by year’s end, and announced they will start supplying by first half of next year.

The organization I represent, the Stop Lynas Coalition has completed the feasibility study on legal action. We have decided to sue the gomen and Lynas. We will be dragging 10 defendants to court, and they include Lynas, MITI, Mosti, Pahang MB, MPK, AELB, DOE and others. That is a lot of defendants and as a result, the cost to do this is huge.

We are looking at raising a preliminary RM300,000 to initiate filing. To handle so many defendants, we plan to engage 4 legal firms, who will be providing 8 lawyers and a team of supporting staff. We expect the case to drag 4-5 years if we need to go to the Federal Court on every step of the way. Therefore, the final cost may be much more than the RM300,000 initial cost.

At this moment in time, we desperately need a court injunction to stop the construction of the plant. We will not be fighting the case on radiation safety, but on procedural irregularities. Consumer Association of Penang has found plenty of these nonsense, like approval of the PEIA in 2-3 weeks time, revising the RIA after it has been approved etc.

I’m writing to you to appeal for funds to sue Lynas and the gomen. No amount is too small. I have tickets for RM200 and RM500 but of course I don’t expect you all to contribute so much.
